Based on the life of Newton, a purebred golden retriever who failed in the show ring, The Not Perfect Hat Club chronicles his journey from being abandoned at the animal shelter to finding a new home, a new job, and a new understanding about what is means to be not perfect.

This book is being launched as part of a global project that allows students and teachers around the globe to discuss their thoughts and reactions to the story with one another through blog posts and via twitter. This allows students to discover commonalities with students in different parts of the world.

Feel free to follow the tweets from our class and around the globe at #NPHCBlogIt.

Stay tuned for more details, thoughts and activities.  Also, be sure to check out the student websites for their personal blogs about the book, and feel free to comment on their posts.

Happy Reading and Blogging!

Fish In A Tree - Day 1

11/1/2015

This past week, we started the Global Read Aloud, "Fish In A Tree" by Lynda Mullaly Hunt.  After the first two chapters, the following quote was shared with the students...

"Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. "
                                        - Albert Einstein

As a class, we discussed what this quote meant and reflected upon a time in our lives when all of us may have felt "like a fish in a tree".  Students then wrote about their fish in a tree moment and decorated their fish. They then placed their fish in a tree in the hallway outside our classroom.

A few of the ideas that were mentioned included:
 * when they first moved to Canada: nothing was familiar, and they didn't speak the language
 * when they felt that they were alone and had no friends
 * when everyone was playing a soccer game and they felt isolated because they did not know what to do in the game

Is there a time in your life that you have felt like a fish in a tree?  If so, please feel free to share in the comments below, or via twitter @KaarinaLosey.  We look forward to hearing from you!
